Statement on passing of James Henderson, Jr.
December 31, 2022: Chief Justice JoAnn B. Jayne released the following statement on the passing of James Henderson, Jr., who served in the Arizona State Senate from 1985 to 1999. "On behalf of the Judicial Branch of the Navajo Nation, I extend our condolences to our colleague Elaine Henderson, her family and the family and friends of Senator James Henderson, Jr. Senator Henderson was a naá ta'ni who was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. We will forever be grateful for his knowledge, dedication to public service, and leadership qualities he shared with the Navajo people, and the people of the state of Arizona. May his legacy of service to the people live on in our hearts and actions."

Seeking nominee to Government Development Commission
The Judicial Branch of the Navajo Nation is seeking applicants for nomination of membership on the Commission on Navajo Government Development. Interested individuals should submit a letter of interest by December 9, 2022. For more information, please read the announcement.
Request for Proposals
The Navajo Nation Judicial Districts seek proposals to provide service of process by qualified Private Process Servers. The proposal letters are due each Friday to the Court Administrator at the district where they propose to provide services. The proposals can be sent electronically through email by December 30, 2022. See Request for Proposals
Tallman confirmed probationary judge
Cecelia Tallman took the oath of office to become a probationary district court judge on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Chief Justice JoAnn B. Jayne administered the oath of office after the Navajo Nation Council voted 22-0 to confirm Tallman's appointment during the Council fall session. Read press release.

The Window Rock District Court, Supreme Court and Peacemaking Program buildings are closed from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2022. The Administrative Office of the Courts and the Window Rock District Court building are closed for services due to a broken water pipe. The closure of the Dilkon Judicial District Court building has been extended through Friday, September 23, 2022. The Court building will reopen on Monday, September 26, 2022. The Court continues to provide services to the public during the closure of its building. See public service announcement for more information.
The Dilkon Judicial District Court building is closed September 6, 2022 through September 9, 2022, but the Court continues to provide services to the public. All hearings scheduled for those dates have been continued. All necessary hearings will be held by telephone conference until further notice. Holiday Closure
The Judicial Branch of the Navajo Nation will be closed Monday, August 15, 2022, in recognition of Navajo Code Talkers Day, which is recognized annually on August 14. The Branch will resume operations on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. If you have any questions, please contact the respective court or program.
The Judicial Branch encourages its employees and the public to honor the Navajo Code Talkers by reflecting on their service and teaching about their contributions to the world. President of the United States Ronald Reagan designated August 14, 1982 as National Navaho Code Talkers Day dedicated "to all members of the Navaho Nation and to all Native Americans who gave of their special talents and their lives so that others might live." The Navajo Nation declared August 14 of each year Navajo Nation Code Talkers Day beginning in 2006.Public service announcement

This will allow for your email to go through to the intended recipient. To pay a fine or fee, mail a money order payable to the "Navajo Nation" to the mailing address. Include citation/court document and contact information. All fines or fees sent will be processed as received on the postmarked date. The instructions in this public service announcements are intended only for the time period that the court or program is affected by closure. As a reminder, exterior doors to all judicial facilities are locked at all times and there is only minimum staff in judicial facilities as required to ensure essential services to the Navajo people and those who utilize the courts. The Judicial Branch of the Navajo Nation will be closed Monday, April 25, 2021, in recognition of Navajo Nation Sovereignty Day. Navajo Nation Sovereignty Day commemorates the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Kerr-McGee Corp. v. Navajo Tribe, which was decided April 16, 1985. In the Opinion, the U.S. Supreme Court explained that the power to tax is an essential attribute of self-government and found that the Navajo Nation had the ability to pass laws, including those related to tax, without the approval of the Secretary of the Interior. The Court stated, "The Navajo Government has been called 'probably the most elaborate' among tribes."

Navajo Nation awarded $31 million in litigation regarding judicial services
April 5, 2022: The Navajo Nation won a significant victory against the U.S. Department of Interior and was awarded more than $31 million in its litigation against the federal government for lack of sufficiently funding judicial services through contracting under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act of 1975. March 2, 2022: The Judicial Branch offers condolences to the family, friends and relatives of Navajo Nation District Court Judge Carol K. Perry. Judge Perry passed away on March 1, 2022, in Albuquerque, N.M. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by the family when confirmed. January 18, 2022: The Judicial Branch of the Navajo Nation is seeking applicants for nomination of membership on the Commission on Navajo Government Development. Pursuant to 2 N.N.C. § 972 (A)(2), one member of the Commission "shall be nominated by the Judicial Branch through the Chief Justice of the Navajo Nation to serve a term of two years from the date of confirmation by the Navajo Nation Council; the nominee shall be a licensed attorney and a member of the Navajo Nation Bar Association."
